Stop Harming, Start Helping: Money for our Green Future, Not Big Oil

I will work with my colleagues at the G-20 to phase out fossil fuel subsidies so that we can better address our climate challenge.

– President Barack Obama, September 22, 2009

Every year, billions of our tax dollars are given away to the oil and coal industries.  It is time to stop funding the problems, and shift to funding the solutions.  We need to fund clean energy and communities vulnerable to climate change, not old and dying industries.

We shouldn’t be giving any of our tax money to subsidize these corporations that already set record profits while polluting.  Our support should go instead to long term climate finance for clean energy that will create more jobs while fighting global warming - and to the victims of climate change globally.  In Copenhagen, the Obama Administration has only pledged a token contribution, to a short term fund for climate finance.  We can, and must do better.

President Obama made an historic pledge at the G20 meeting to end fossil fuel subsidies.  Lets ask him to pledge to use that money instead towards long term climate finance.  He needs to end those subsidies he can right away, and he’ll need all of us to pressure Congress to side with people over polluters.

Please send the letter below to President Obama and your Representatives in Congress to demand that our government stop supporting Big Oil and Coal, and shift that money instead to clean energy and people around the world vulnerable to climate impacts.
