A new oil law set to go before the Iraqi Parliament soon would, if passed, go a long way towards helping US & European oil companies control and profit from Iraq's oil.

Meanwhile, Congress is considering legislation that will greatly increase our nation's commitment to clean energy. Congress should say yes to clean energy and no to the theft of Iraqi oil.

Dear Representative,

I write you today on two related matters of vital importance. We urgently need a national energy strategy that places clean energy above oil dependence, and oil wars.

Please take a stand by passing HR 969 which would greatly increase our nation's commitment to clean energy, and by rejecting the Bush administration’s proposed oil law for Iraq and demanding that its passage be removed from the President’s official benchmarks for Iraq.

For four years, the Bush administration has aggressively pursued a new oil law for Iraq that is now set to go before Iraq’s Parliament.

The law is truly radical and unlike any other in the Middle East.  It would transform Iraq’s oil industry from a nationalized model to a commercial model that is much more open to U.S. corporate control.

The law is the smoking gun revealing the oil agenda behind the Iraq war. It is what the war was for.

While the Bush Administration emphasizes the law's revenue sharing plan, whereby the central government would evenly distribute oil revenues throughout the nation on a per capita basis, it fails to mention that the benefits of this proposal are radically undercut by the law's many other provisions--which allow much (if not most) of Iraq’s oil revenues to flow out of Iraq and into the pockets of international oil companies.

Iraqis are most likely decide their future in a manner that best serves their own needs if freed from the tremendous external pressure being exercised by the Bush administration and the presence of more than 150,000 members of the American military.

Meanwhile, back in Washington. Big Oil and King Coal are fighting hard to stop legislation like HR 969 that would reduce our dependence on oil.  We need you to vote for our energy future, and against our current,. bloody energy strategy.

Please reject the oil law, reject its passage as a benchmark for the Iraqis, reject the occupation of Iraq, and support real democracy, sovereignty, and economic development for Iraq.
